Seeds of Transformation
Mural design by Desiree Filkins
"Seeds of Transformation" is a vibrant mural inspired by the voices of the Cape Cod community, woven together through a visual patchwork of shared heritage and resilience.
The design draws upon imagery from our community listening session, where concepts of unity, growth, and hope emerged. Like a patchwork quilt, the mural connects us through our stories, adorned with native Cape Cod flowers, feathers, and quahog shells to honor the rich history of the Wampanoag people and Indigenous heritage.
The quote, "They didn't know we were seeds," is a metaphor for overcoming obstacles, as flowers require both dirt and darkness to bloom. Butterfly and ladybug imagery symbolize transformation and hope, reflecting the Cape’s ability to evolve and shape lives over the years.
The mural also pays tribute to Eugenia Fortes, whose tireless civil work stitched the fabric of equality into Cape Cod’s history. Her legacy is represented in the hands and quilt elements, acknowledging her history with the beach and the Kennedys. This artwork celebrates our collective journey, our growth through adversity, and our commitment to a future rooted in hope and unity.
